If you’ve ever experienced mood swings, bloating, stubborn weight, or irregular cycles, you know how frustrating it can be to feel like your hormones are out of balance.

What many women don’t realize is that the key to balancing their hormones isn’t just in their ovaries or glands—it’s in their gut.

Your gut and hormones are deeply connected, and when one is off, the other often follows. Let’s explore how your gut influences estrogen, the role of your microbiome, and what signs to look out for when things are out of balance.

The Gut-Hormone Connection

The gut plays a critical role in maintaining hormonal balance, particularly with estrogen.

Your microbiome—trillions of bacteria and other microbes living in your gut—does more than just break down food and support immunity. It also impacts how your body processes and eliminates hormones like estrogen.

How the Microbiome Affects Estrogen

  1. Beta-Glucuronidase and Estrogen Recycling. Your gut bacteria produce an enzyme called beta-glucuronidase, which determines whether estrogen is excreted or reabsorbed. A healthy microbiome ensures this enzyme functions properly, helping to eliminate excess estrogen. An imbalance in gut bacteria (dysbiosis) can lead to too much beta-glucuronidase, causing estrogen to be reabsorbed and leading to estrogen dominance.

  2. Gut Dysbiosis and Hormonal Imbalance. When harmful bacteria overgrow, they disrupt the natural microbiome balance. Dysbiosis can worsen hormonal symptoms like PMS, heavy periods, and even perimenopause.

Signs Your Gut May Be Affecting Your Hormones

Here are some common symptoms that indicate your gut health may be throwing off your hormones:

  • Bloating, gas, or digestive discomfort (especially around your cycle)

  • Constipation or irregular bowel movements

  • PMS symptoms like mood swings or breast tenderness

  • Fatigue or low energy levels

  • Stubborn weight gain or water retention

If these sound familiar, it’s time to take a closer look at your gut.
